Sinopsis
Published on the occasion of the exhibition Antonio Raphael Mengs 1728-1779, held at the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, from November 25, 2025, to March 1, 2026. Trained artistically in Dresden and Rome under his father, the court painter Ismail Mengs (1687-1764), Antonio Raphael Mengs (1728-1779) received his names from his father's admiration for Antonio Allegri da Correggio (c. 1489-1534) and Raffaello (Raphael) Sanzio of Urbino (1483-1520). His beginnings as a painter were also at the Saxon electoral court and later at the papal court in Rome, under the patronage of various members of the papal curia, including Cardinal Alessandro Albani, with whom he was commissioned to paint the famous mural on Mount Parnassus. In 1761, he entered the service of Charles III, remaining for the rest of his life under the patronage of the King of Spain and the Indies.
This exhibition catalogue explores his artistic and theoretical activity throughout the different stages of his life, through the finest examples of his work brought together in the exhibition. To the rich collection of Mengs's works in Spain, distributed between the Prado Museum and the Royal Collections of the National Heritage, have been added outstanding paintings from Europe and the Americas. This exceptional combination is further enriched in Madrid by the nearby presence of his mural paintings in the Royal Palace.
The volume represents a significant advance in our understanding of the painter and an of research on his life and work, with contributions from specialists who analyze his activity in Dresden, Rome, and Spain, his artistic thought, his devotion to classical antiquity, and, finally, with a novel study of his technique, both in easel and mural painting.
